The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy.

The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.

Through a revamped curriculum, students learn the skills they need to succeed in the new media environment, whether they pursue careers in journalism, advertising, public relations or other communications fields.

The school offers undergraduate areas of study in advertising & public relations and journalism.

Special programs in business journalism, environment and science communication, health communication, Latino journalism and media, sports communication, science and medical journalism and a joint M.A./J.D. degree are also offered.

The school is located in Carroll Hall on the historic Polk Place quad of the nation’s first public university — just a short walk from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s iconic Old Well. Carroll Hall has been equipped with state-of-the-art classrooms, labs and media production facilities. It is also home to the extensive Park Library; the Charles Kuralt Learning Center; the NC Media and Journalism Hall of Fame; and the Freedom Forum Conference Center.
