Career Services assists undergraduate and master’s students with every aspect of career preparation via walk-in hours or by appointment in the Student Services area on the first floor of Carroll Hall. Appointments generally last 30 minutes and can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance.

Career Treks


Internships for credit

Stay up-to-date on new internship and job leads by subscribing to the MJ Career Services weekly digest. All internships and entry-level positions are also posted on Handshake.


During the fall and spring semesters, selected students participate in Career Treks across the United States to learn from alumni and make connections in their career fields.


"MEJO 393: Mass Communication Practicum" is a 1-credit hour, pass/fail, internship-for-credit course offered in the fall and spring semesters and the second session of summer school.

This mobile group messaging app will be used to help foster a community of support as you transition to a new area. It will also be a great way to connect with fellow MJ-school students and begin networking. If you are interning, working or job searching in any of these areas and would like join, click the link below for your specific location.

Job boards

In addition to Handshake, industry-focused job boards are a great way to discover job openings. A few of the many media and journalism professional organizations with career centers or job boards include the American Advertising Federation, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Public Relations Society of America, the Public Relations Student Society of America, the Society for News Design, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Additionally, available positions at UNC-Chapel Hill are posted via the UNC Human Resources Careers at Carolina job board.

LinkedIn Learning is a leading online learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals. Through the UNC-Chapel Hill subscription, current students have access to the LinkedIn Learning video library of engaging, top-quality courses taught by recognized industry experts. Within the LinkedIn Learning library, the "Career Development Training and Tutorials" playlist provides more than 150 courses on leadership, management techniques, productivity, resume writing and more. Students can also explore Learning Paths to find courses organized by career trajectories and skill sets.

MJAA Mentorship Program

The goal of the MJAA Mentorship Program is to support the educational and professional growth of student participants — and for alumni professionals to play a key role in the development of UNC’s next generation of media and journalism industry leaders. The program is facilitated by the MJ-school and the Media and Journalism Alumni Association (MJAA) Board.
