Usage & Grammar Test

U&G Update: Graduating seniors who have not passed the Usage and Grammar test will be contacted to schedule taking the test online. Usage and Grammar tests administered in MEJO 153 “Writing and Reporting” are canceled for the spring semester. All other test times will be suspended until further notice.

The Usage and Grammar Test is designed to evaluate word usage, grammar and punctuation competencies based on AP Style. It is a timed 40-minute test given electronically through Sakai that consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Allow about one hour in your schedule for this test.

Graduation requirement

UNC Hussman majors are required to score 70 percent or better on the test prior to graduation. All MEJO 153 students will take the test once in class. Hussman minors are not required to score 70 percent or better.

Consider this test seriously. It is a degree requirement just as is any required course. It is offered multiple times throughout each fall and spring semester, once each summer session and there is no limit or penalty for how many times the test is taken. Seats are limited and, as the end of the semester approaches, availability can be extremely competitive. There will be no additional tests. Make every effort to fulfill this obligation prior to your final semester. Your degree is NOT awarded until you complete all requirements.

How you can prepare

Please contact Marla Barnes with any questions at or in 161 Carroll Hall.

Testing opportunities

Current MEJO 153 students will take the test once only during class. MEJO 153 students do NOT register for seats through the calendar until the next term (if a passing score was not earned in class).

Tests are BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and require a laptop for completion. Prior to the test, download Mozilla Firefox browser to your laptop as it is best suited to Sakai programming and recommended for testing. Ensure your laptop is fully charged due to limited outlet access in testing rooms.

Students self-identified with ARS must notify Marla Barnes upon seat reservation at the latest.

Reserve your seat beginning one week prior to each test date via the school’s calendar. If your plans change, cancel your registration.

  • Cancellations prior to closing: Cancel your test registration by accessing the Mobile Summary via your registration confirmation email. After logging in with your registered email and opening your ticket summary, an option for canceling your order will be available. If you have trouble canceling, please contact Marla Barnes.
  • Cancellations after registration closes: Please notify Marla Barnes at your earliest convenience.
