Meredith Clark — recent Ph.D. grad and current assistant professor in the School of Journalism at the University of North Texas — will be visiting UNC’s Institute of African American Research to discuss her research on Black Twitter.

The talk will be held in the Wilson Library Pleasants Family Assembly Room from 3-5 p.m on Monday, Sept. 19.

Meredith Clark lays the groundwork for understanding crucial aspect of Black digital culture on Twitter from 2010 to the present. Beginning with a brief overview of the communication history that has made Black Twitter what it is, Clark will present an explication of its theoretical form and function, and close an Afrofuturist vision of what Black performance in this space means for social networking in the post-Twitter era. Clark will present a exploration of how Black Twitter has used social media to shape political and cultural movements both on and offline, and introduce questions on where Black content creators may go to find community and mobility in light of economic and security threats against the platform and its users.
