Patrick Davison

Pat Davison has been teaching photo, video and documentary multimedia storytelling in the school since 2001. During that time he has produced more than 25 student-team multimedia projects from places as diverse as the Galapagos Islands, Thailand, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and North Carolina. These projects have been recognized by some of the industry’s top awards, including the Webby Awards, SXSW Interactive, Pictures of the Year International, Hearst Intercollegiate Awards, and others.

 

Davison won the university-wide Hettleman Award for Scholarly and Creative Excellence in 2005, The Ed Vick Award for Innovation in Teaching in 2006 and was named Director of Documentary Projects in 2008. He became a full professor in 2013 and spent the 2014-2015 academic year in Tokyo, Japan, as a Fulbright Scholar. He is currently finishing two documentaries produced while abroad.

 

Davison is also the founder of the Carolina Photojournalism Workshop (started in 2004), the Carolina Sports Photography Workshop (started in 2008), The 37th Frame (annual student exhibition started in 2002), and Carolina Photo Night (monthly speaker series started in 2001).

 

Davison was part of the Rocky Mountain News photo staff that received the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Breaking News Photography in 2000, for coverage of the Columbine High School tragedy.

 

In a journalism career spanning 25 years Davison has won more than 100 awards and held staff positions with the Rocky Mountain News, the Dallas Morning News, the Pittsburgh Press and the Albuquerque Tribune.

 

Davison and his wife, Emiko, have three daughters.
