Funding

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media undergraduate majors who have been admitted to the school are eligible to apply for funding for a range of purposes, including:

  • Extracurricular activities
  • Internships
  • Immersive experiences
  • Scholarships 
  • Travel for academic programs

Extracurricular Activities

 

Extracurricular activity funds may be used for conferences and workshops, internships, project travel, etc. but cannot be used for class-related purposes. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis — August through March — during the academic year.

Immersive experiences

Immersive experience funds encourage students to "learn by doing." Funds support a variety of projects, such as producing a multimedia documentary, international travel and the chance to "gain new experiences, learn new technologies and master new subjects." Apply Jan. 1 – Feb. 1 through the immersive experiences application (linked below).

Scholarships

Hussman School scholarships are awarded to undergraduate majors each spring for the following academic year.  Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Please follow directions for applying through the scholarship application (linked below). All recipients will be notified by April.

How are scholarship funds distributed? Scholarships are transferred to the student's UNC account at the start of the fall and spring semesters. Scholarships must be reported by the Hussman School to the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and may affect the student's financial aid. Funds may have tax implications.

Travel for academic programs

Partial funding is available for MEJO 437: International Media Markets: China, MEJO 447, International Media Markets: London, MEJO 488: Multimedia Storytelling: Carolina Photojournalism Workshop, MEJO 584: International Projects and Hussman School study abroad programs. Students interested in these programs will be notified how to apply.

How are travel funds distributed? Scholarships are transferred to the student's UNC account at the start of the fall, spring or summer terms, depending on when the courses are held. The Hussman School works with the UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid to verify financial need.  Funding from the Hussman School may affect the student's financial aid. In select cases, funding may be made as direct payments by check or direct deposit into the student's bank account. Funding may have tax implications.
