Extracurricular activity funds may be used for conferences, workshops and other journalism- and media-related activities. Funds cannot be used for class-related purposes. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis — August through March — during the academic year.

Students will receive funds via their UNC student account.

Extracurricular funding applications are closed for 2025-26.

The Cole Campbell Professional Development Fund helps student journalists attend workshops, career fairs and meetings offered by various professional journalism organizations.

This fund honors Cole Campbell, a 1975 Carolina graduate, Daily Tar Heel editor, Morehead scholar and debater. He reported for newspapers in Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Greensboro; served as editor of Tar Heel Magazine, the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk and the Post-Dispatch in St. Louis; became a fellow at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and a senior fellow at the Kettering Foundation; and served as dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada-Reno.

The Don and Barbara Curtis Excellence Fund for Extracurricular Activities supports UNC Hussman undergraduate majors who participate in meaningful out-of-class activities that will help them in their careers.

Activities available for funding include:

  • Registration and travel expenses for media- and journalism-related workshops, conferences, competitions, etc.
  • Working on a major story, documentary or project.
  • Participating in group trips to major U.S. cities sponsored by UNC Hussman organizations such as the Carolina Association of Black Journalists, Ad Club, etc.
  • Summer internships (funding is awarded through the internship application managed by UNC Hussman Career Services).
  • Expenses for student organizations whose accounts are managed by UNC Hussman.

This fund provides financial assistance to deserving UNC Hussman students. The donor wishes to help students with school-related expenses such as books, computers, electronic devices or other technology, meal plans and other costs directly related to their schoolwork and/or professional development. Funds may also be used to cover expenses related to participation in summer internships.

The fund was established by Patricia Miller Moore of Greenville, North Carolina, a 1958 graduate of the school and former journalist who worked for the United Press International, The News & Observer and the Daily Reflector.

The Scott Foundation Expendable Fund for Student Experiences assists students with a demonstrated financial need (determined by the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid) to be able to take advantage of the school’s many transformational experiential learning opportunities available both through coursework and extracurricular opportunities.
