UNC Hussman internship stipends provide students with substantial support for summer internships. These funds are available exclusively for UNC Hussman majors.

Please note that graduating seniors are not eligible to apply (minors are not eligible to apply for funding).

You do not have to have a summer internship secured in order to apply for the stipend. In other words, APPLY!

Funds are transferred to the student’s UNC account. Please note that this funding may impact financial aid eligibility; if you receive financial aid, it may be replaced with this funding. Depending on the type of aid you receive, this could replace student loan, Work-Study, or need-based gift aid. If you have any questions about how your aid is impacted, please contact the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (aidinfo@unc.edu).

If you have any questions about internship stipends, please contact Jay Eubank, Hussman Director of Career Services, at jeubank@email.unc.edu.

Available Funds

The Alan L. Marks Internship Fund supports media internships and is available to students in all areas of the school. Funds may be used for housing, travel or related expenses incurred in carrying out the internship.

The AT&T Business Internship Award is given to an undergraduate major interested in business journalism. To be eligible for this award, the student must have arranged a business journalism internship.

Preference is given to students from the AT&T service area.

The E.T. Kirk Award for Student Athletes supports an extracurricular or class-based immersive experience for one or more student athletes in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

The Jim and Pat Thacker Sports Communication Internship is awarded to UNC Hussman undergraduate majors to intern with professional sports organizations during the summer.

This award honors Jim and Pat Thacker of Charlotte, N.C. Jim Thacker was a well-known ACC sportscaster in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Thousands of ACC fans grew up watching Thacker and commentator Billy Packer on weekly network telecasts. Thacker also worked on many other events, including golf’s Masters and PGA tournaments and the Ryder Cup for CBS, ESPN and British television.

Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to be considered.

The Jim Batten Community Newspaper Internship is awarded to UNC Hussman undergraduate majors to fund living expenses during summer internships at a community newspaper.

The Jim Batten Community Newspaper Internship was created to honor the memory of James Allen Batten, editor of several North Carolina newspapers and the owner of Emerald Isle Realty, one of the largest real estate agencies in the state. Batten was committed throughout his newspaper career to the training of young journalists. Many reporters with whom he worked became award-winning writers and broadcast journalists in North Carolina and across the country. Even as a successful real estate professional in his later years, he remained committed to the health of small-town papers in his home state of North Carolina.

The M.S. Van Hecke Award provides a summer internship on the business desk of The Charlotte Observer. The award is meant to pay the recipient’s expenses during that internship.

Van Hecke was a 1948 graduate of the school who began his career with the New Bern Sun-Journal and Kinston Daily Free Press. His 34 years with The Charlotte Observer earned him the respect of North Carolina’s business leaders, journalists and newspaper readers. He covered Charlotte’s rise from a state banking center to one of the South’s most important business hubs. In addition to his work as a business editor, he served as city editor, state editor and news editor at The Observer.

The N.C. Medical Society Foundation Medical Journalism Internship supports a news internship at a N.C. media outlet for a student with a strong career interest in medical journalism.

The Richard H. Jenrette Business Internship Fund supports students participating in a business journalism summer internship.

The Rick and Jennifer Bruning Student Internship Support Fund supports housing, travel or other expenses related to a summer internship.
