$3,500 Attaway Award available for outdoor journalism project

Attaway AwardReviewing a new sportfishing boat's performance. Covering a 100-year-old skeet club's annual competition. Running with the bulls in Pamplona. Or...what would be your dream story to see published?

A one-time $3,500 award is available this year in memory of UNC graduate Roy Attaway, a prominent outdoor writer and former editor of Yachting magazine. The award will fund travel and expenses for a UNC J-school student who proposes a story or journalism project focused on outdoor recreation.

Apply by sending a resume and one-page proposal to professor John Sweeney in Carroll Hall 235 by Monday, Feb. 21. Entries must describe the story, provide a budget and offer a plan indicating how or where the story is expected to be published.

A committee will review all proposals and present the award to one student at the school’s April 25 Honors Convocation.

The award was made possible by gifts to the school from Attaway’s friends and admirers. He died May 9, 2010.
