Bloomberg editor Winkler speaks about FOIA and the Wall Street bailout

Matt WinklerMatthew Winkler, Bloomberg News editor-in-chief, gave a free, public lecture at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on Sept. 22 in the Carroll Hall auditorium on the UNC campus.

He spoke about the Freedom of Information Act and how Bloomberg has used it to get information from the Federal Reserve about the 2008 Wall Street bailout.

Winkler founded the global news service with Michael Bloomberg in 1990. In 20 years, Bloomberg has grown into a news organization with more than 2,300 editors, reporters and multimedia professionals working in 146 bureaus in 72 countries.

Winkler co-authored “Bloomberg by Bloomberg” and authored “The Bloomberg Way: A Guide for Reporters and Editors.” He chairs the board of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program at Columbia University and is on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists.  Prior to joining Bloomberg, Winkler reported for The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and Dow Jones news services.

He won the 2007 Gerald Loeb Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2007 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2003 New York Financial Writers' Association Elliott V. Bell Award.

Winkler earned his bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate of law from Kenyon College.
