Multimedia projects recognized in SND Best of Digital News Design

Two multimedia projects produced by students at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media – Powering a Nation and Living Galapagos – were recognized in the Society for News Design’s (SND) 2010 Best of Digital News Design competition.

Powering a Nation, a News21 project that investigates the political, economic and scientific tension behind U.S. energy, won a Silver Award in the Section/Topic Presentation category and an Award of Excellence in the student division of the Use of Multimedia category. Living Galapagos, which examines the human and tourist interaction with the natural habitats of the Galapagos Islands, also received an Award of Excellence in the student division of the Use of Multimedia category.

In this year’s competition, SND reinvented the competition with new categories and divisions to showcase the range of industry work that includes photography, mobile applications and more.

More than 20 industry leaders spent a month narrowing more than 500 entries to 150. They met in person at Ball State University in February to select winners. In total, 60 awards were given: one Gold Award and Best of Show. Fifteen Silver Awards, four Judges’ Special Recognition awards and 40 Awards of Excellence were given. Categories were judged by divisions based on average monthly page views.
