Jim Batten Community Newspaper Internship

Description

The Jim Batten Community Newspaper Internship is awarded to Hussman School undergraduate majors to fund living expenses during a summer internship at a community newspaper.

The Jim Batten Community Newspaper Internship was created to honor the memory of James Allen Batten, editor of several N.C. newspapers and the owner of Emerald Isle Realty, one of the largest real estate agencies in the state. Batten was committed throughout his newspaper career to the training of young journalists. Many reporters with whom he worked became prize-winning writers and broadcast journalists, in North Carolina and across the country.  Even as a successful real-estate businessman in his later years, he remained committed to the health of small-town papers in his home state of North Carolina.
