Recent awards to faculty and students

Students and faculty are winning national and regional honors for their work.

Among the recent faculty award winners are Chris Roush (Scripps Howard Foundation journalism teacher of the year); Jock Lauterer (Provost Award for Engaged Scholarship); Chad Stevens (ASME National Magazine Award for Digital Media); and Cathy Packer (N.C. Press Association First Amendment Award). Janas Sinclair was elected secretary for the American Academy of Advertising for 2011. Tom Linden’s book – “The New York Times Reader: Health & Medicine" – was published this month by CQ Press.

Recent student award winners include John Adkisson (N.C. Press Photographers Association College
Photographer of the Year); Andrew Dunn and Matthew Lynley (Society of American Business Editors and Writers Best in Business contest); Ashley Lopez (third in the national Hearst Journalism Awards radio multimedia competition); Bethany Tuggle (fifth in the Hearst TV news category); and Powell Latimer (10th in the Hearst sports writing competition).

The school's advertising students won two of the four 2010 ADDY awards presented by the Raleigh-Durham American Advertising Federation. NJ Placentra won gold for his magazine campaign for Bose audio systems. A team of students – Melissa Withorn, Mackenzie Gibbs, Paula Buzzi, Adam Hinson and Sarah Whitworth – won a silver ADDY for their non-traditional advertising work on international non-profit Carolina for Kibera (CFK).

Pictures of the Year International selected the school’s interactive multimedia project “Powering A Nation,” which explores the crisis and challenges of energy in America, for an Award of Excellence in the documentary project of the year category.
