14 Hussman Schoolers to intern in DC thanks to 2019 Sharoky Fellowship Program funding

Another round of fellows will complete internships in Washington, D.C., in Summer 2019 thanks to the Sharoky Fellowship Program.

Each summer, the Sharoky Family Foundation awards $3,500 to cover living expenses for Hussman School students with internships in the nation's capitol. This year, 14 scholars will contribute their talents to companies ranging from NBC News to the John F. Kennedy Center.

The 2019 recipients include:
 

Martha Bennett '20

Public Relations Intern | John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

Martha Bennett '20 is a rising senior from Greenville, North Carolina, studying public relations in the Hussman School. The incoming president for the Hussman School Ambassadors, she has had previous public relations and marketing internship experiences at 1893 Brand Studio in Chapel Hill, the Durham Performing Arts Center and the London Film Academy. She will be completing a public relations internship with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Summer 2019. Bennett hopes to integrate her passion for arts and entertainment by pursuing a publicity- and communications-focused career in the film and television industry.

Hayley Boland '20

Intern | NBC News/MSNBC Andrea Mitchell Reports

Hayley Boland '20 is a junior from Troutville, Virginia, studying broadcast journalism and peace, war and defense. She was the 2018-19 president of MJSA and the 2019 president of the UNC Panhellenic Council. Boland has experience as a reporter for Carolina Week and as a news intern for WFXR-TV/WWCW-TV in Roanoke, Virginia, where she is the only intern to have multiple stories make air in the internship program's history. She currently works as a communications fellow for UNC New Student and Family Programs, where she handles publications, social media and video content. Boland will be interning with NBC News/MSNBC Andrea Mitchell Reports in Summer 2019.

Kayla Boswell '20

Communications Intern | George Washington University

Kayla Boswell '20 is a rising senior majoring in broadcast journalism. She has experience in writing, event planning, social media marketing, anchoring and producing. She is an excellent writer and communicator and has past experience working with communications and social media for large companies. Upon graduation next year, Boswell hopes to work in the entertainment industry. This summer, she will complete a communications internship with George Washington University.

Kayla Boykins '19

Junior Associate | Clyde Group

Kayla Boykins '19 is a senior from Acworth, Georgia, and while she is not originally from North Carolina, she quickly became a Tar Heel for life. She is studying public relations and American studies. Boykins entered into the field of public relations because she discovered she had a passion for helping others tell stories in innovative ways to help spread their message. When she is not cheering on the Tar Heels, Boykins enjoys dancing with Blank Canvas Dance Company and heading out to see a new film. After graduation, she will be moving to Washington, D.C., to begin working as a Junior Associate at Clyde Group, a communications and public affairs firm.

Brooke Fisher '19

UX Design Intern | Viget

Brooke Fisher '19 is a graduating senior interactive multimedia and global studies double major from Weaverville, North Carolina. During Summer 2019, she will intern at Viget in Falls Church, Virginia, as a UX design intern. Fisher has previously interned with Chinese internet company NetEase as a livestream intern; American City Business Journals as a design intern; and the National Humanities Center as a web development intern. In her free time, she loves reading, writing and watching Carolina basketball as a student in the Marching Tar Heels.

Hanna Grimm '20

Live Events Intern | Politico

Hanna Grimm '20 is a rising senior from Waxhaw, North Carolina. She is a media and journalism major on the strategic communication track with a second major in political science and a minor in history. Her passion lies at the intersection of language and politics. Grimm has spent the last year interning at Duke Graduate School, and has previously interned for the North Carolina Democratic Party in their communications and research office. Last spring, she studied abroad at the University of Manchester in Manchester, England, studying politics from a global perspective. Grimm will work with Politico this summer as a live events intern.

Molly Horak '20

Communications Intern | Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

Molly Horak '20 is a rising senior from Asheville, North Carolina, double majoring in media and journalism and political science with a minor in Hispanic studies. Previously, Horak has served as an assistant editor at The Daily Tar Heel, a reporting intern at the Asheville Citizen-Times and Mountain Xpress newspapers, and currently serves as the executive producer of AcaDames, a podcast about women in academia. This summer, Horak will complete a communications internship at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Lyric Lin '20

Consumer Experience and Insights Digital Design Intern | USA Today

Lyric Lin '20 is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor of arts in media and journalism with a concentration in advertising and public relations. At Carolina, Lin is working as a graphic designer for the University Libraries and is an active member of the Advertising Club and Public Relations Student Society of America. In Summer 2019, she will be working in Washington, D.C., as a Consumer Experience and Insights Digital Design Intern at USA Today. Ultimately, Lin strives to pursue a career in the entertainment industry that will allow her to combine her passions for working with people, graphic and website design, photography, videography and public relations.

Casey Quam '21

Editorial Intern | CoStar Group

Casey Quam '21 is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in media and journalism, and a minor in entrepreneurship. In Summer 2019, Quam will be working in the newsroom at the CoStar Group in Washington, D.C. CoStar is a commercial real estate data company, and its newsroom reports real estate news in D.C. and around the country. She writes Tor the Daily Tar Heel covering University news, and NC Biz News Wire, covering the North Carolina-based business that is often underreported by larger news organizations. Much of Quam’s University news work has covered the toppling of UNC’s Confederate monument Silent Sam and subsequent events. Her main focus at NC Biz News Wire has been mergers and acquisitions. Her stories for Biz News Wire have been picked up by larger organizations, including the Charlotte Business Journal, Charlotte Raleigh City Biz List and WRAL Tech Wire. Quam enjoys reporting a variety of stories, including local and national politics, business and arts and culture.

Natalie Rinehard '21

Intern | American Academy of Physician Assistants

Natalie Rinehard '21 is an advertising and public relations and psychology double major from Raleigh, North Carolina. She hopes to pursue a career in market research and consumer psychology after graduation. Rinehard holds an executive position on the client and judge relations committee for Crash Campaign. She is a brand ambassador for Purcado — a company founded by a UNC alumnus to help individuals save money on shoes — and an active member and PR chair for UNC's only gender-inclusive honor fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi. Rinehard will be interning in Summer 2019 with the American Academy of Physician Assistants in Alexandria, Virginia.

Sami Snellings '20

College Associate | FOX News

Sami Snellings '20 is a rising senior studying media journalism, political science and entrepreneurship. Her blog, Walk In Their Shoes, features in-depth profile stories on different walks of life. Past interviewees have included people such a Ben Higgins, star of the reality show The Bachelor, and White House reporter Kevin Corke. Snellings has previously interned for 303 Magazine, PeerSource and Newsmax's senior White House correspondent, John Gizzi. She is passionate about traveling, exploring the mountains in her home state of Colorado and walking with Jesus. She will be interning as a college associate for FOX News in Summer 2019.

Amy Townsend '19

Front-End Development Intern | Viget

Amy Townsend '19 is a front-end web developer and visual designer studying media and journalism and information science. To become a more proficient developer, she would like to gain as much experience as possible in professional environments where she can have her code reviewed by others. Townsend's goals include working at digital or creative agencies with collaborative team environments where she can grow from working with other developers and designers. She will be completing a front-end development internship with Viget in Summer 2019, where she will work on a personalized project under the mentorship of one of Viget's senior front-end developers.

Talia Wlcek '20

Marketing and Communication Intern | Siemens

Talia Wlcek '20 is a rising senior studying strategic communication and political science with a minor in business administration. Native to North Carolina, she was born and raised in Charlotte. Wlcek is passionate about U.S. government, civil rights and communications. She hopes to work in public affairs or political communication after graduating in 2020. Wlcek is a Kenan Scholar at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and serves as her sorority's recruitment director and public relations chair. In Spring 2019, she interned as a communications assistant with Lead for America. In Summer 2019, she will be completing a marketing and communication internship with Siemens.

Jaein Yoon '20

Communications Intern | The Solar Electric Light Fund

Jaein Yoon '20 is studying in environmental studies and advertising and public relations and minoring in studio art. Yoon was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, where she started River Guardians, an after-school club. Her involvement with a nonprofit organization called Love A Sea Turtle has inspired her to pursue a career in strategic communication working to create eco-conscious businesses. Yoon is thrilled to continue her career development in art along with advertising through her summer communications internship with The Solar Electric Light Fund.
