Alumnus Doni Holloway '18 named NABJ Student Journalist of the Year

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) named UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media recent graduate Doni Holloway its 2018 Student Journalist of the Year.

While at the Hussman School, Holloway, an aspiring television news anchor now interning at Bloomberg TV in New York, created "Carolina Now" — the school’s first daily social media-driven newscast that aired live on Facebook. He was managing editor, executive producer and anchor of “Carolina Now.”

“I'm deeply grateful, humbled and honored,” Holloway said of the NABJ honor. “My gratitude is immeasurable for this recognition and for the investment NABJ has made in my journalism career and professional trajectory."

Holloway knew early on that he wanted to be a journalist, serving as the editor of his family's newsletter at age 6 and anchoring his high school’s campus news. While in high school, he was selected to participate in the Hussman School’s 2015 Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media.

The Stone Program provides intensive training and mentoring to 12 rising high school seniors from across the nation each year. It honors the legacy of legendary journalist and Hussman School Professor Charles ‘Chuck’ Sumner Stone Jr., who co-founded the NABJ in 1975 to provide career development as well as educational and other support to its members worldwide.

“Doni exemplifies the vision we have for the Chuck Stone Program,” said Susan King, dean of the school. “It’s been so gratifying to see Doni come through that program, decide to attend Carolina and flourish as a student leader.  His recognition as the NABJ student journalist of the year solidifies him as one of the next generation to serve the public.  I know that he will make our profession proud — he’s well on his way to a successful career bringing with him the values, perspective and skills honed here.”

Holloway was honored at the 2018 NABJ Convention and Career Fair in Detroit on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Associate Professor Trevy McDonald (pictured right) nominated Holloway for the award.
