Bloomberg-UNC-Berkeley Diversity Program introduces diverse students to business journalism

The 2018 Bloomberg-UNC-Berkeley Diversity Program begins Monday, May 14, with 11 university students competitively selected from across the country arriving at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

The students will spend three days participating in intensive workshops in Chapel Hill before flying up to New York City to tour the Bloomberg newsroom, meet key representatives and finish up the program on Friday, May 18.

The program was started by Matt Winkler, editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, to introduce journalism students to the dynamic field of business journalism and to increase diversity among journalists reporting on business.

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism joined the program this year and will host 9 additional students on their campus and Bloomberg News in San Francisco on May 21-24.

Winkler, who will lead the program, wrote The Bloomberg Way, the book on how Bloomberg reporters should cover business news. Winkler will lead the group through the principles of reporting, editing and applied business and economic knowledge that helped transform Bloomberg News into the world's most successful business reporting operation. Participants will learn to demonstrate that the story of the economy, business and markets is best recorded when the focus is on the greatest diversity of participants.

Bloomberg News was founded in 1990 and is the world's leader in financial news with more than 2,600 journalists and analysts in bureaus throughout the world. Participants in this all-expenses paid workshop will have the opportunity to visit the Bloomberg offices in New York City or San Francisco, meet with business reporters and editors, and learn about the craft of business journalism.
