Chancellor and provost visit J-school

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media hosted Chancellor Carol Folt and Provost Jim Dean on Friday, Sept. 20, for an overview visit of the school, its people, programs and facilities.

At the day's end, Folt called the school "vibrant" and "a stimulating place to be."

"Everybody here is talking about the future," she said while addressing the faculty. "You're talking about what you're creating…not at all about what you did before. It's about how you're going to do it in the future…and use every bit of creative energy to create it."

Folt and Dean are visiting all of the schools on campus. Folt's official installation as chancellor will take place on University Day — Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 — during which she will deliver an installation address on the steps of South Building.

The chancellor and provost were welcomed to the school by Dean Susan King, senior associate deans Chris Roush, Heidi Hennink-Kaminiski and Louise Spieler, and Hussman School Ambassadors president Megan Canjar.

They toured the school with a stop at the new Advertising | PR Innovation Lab to learn about advertising, public relations and strategic communication programs, including student-run creative agency Heelprint Communications and Workroom — an immersive marketing, design, production and promotion program.

They visited the Reese News Lab for an introduction to its experimental news products, a gesture-based technology presentation and an overview of the school's business journalism efforts.

Research faculty hosted them in the Halls of Fame room to highlight research projects with impact including health communication, sex trafficking, social media, data-driven journalism and political journalism.

Folt and Dean also toured the school's broadcast facilities and observed the Carolina Week crew working on its newscast.
