Hussman School students and alumni recognized at RTDNAC/AP Awards

More than 10 UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students and alumni won awards at the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas/Associated Press annual luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2015, at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The awards recognize the best of TV, radio and online journalism in North and South Carolina for professionals and students.

"It's really gratifying to have our students' work recognized by our professional colleagues throughout the Carolinas," said Dr. Charlie Tuggle, senior associate dean of undergraduate studies at the school. "After all, they're the people we hope will be hiring our graduates soon."

The school's three student broadcast news productions won first place in their respective categories.

Hussman School students were recognized in nearly every individual category for radio and TV.

  • Louis Fernandez, First Place, Best Radio Feature Reporting
  • Jess Clark, First Place, Best Radio News Reporting
  • Andrew Tie, First Place, Best Radio Sports Story
  • A.J. Nwoko, First Place, Best Photography; First Place, Best TV Sports Story
  • Alexis Simmons, Second Place, Best TV Feature Reporting

"To have all three shows recognized as the best student work in the region and to have May graduate Susanna Black pick up the Student Journalist of the Year award are testaments to the hard work and dedication of our stellar students," Tuggle said.

Alumni Molly Grantham, Alena Oakes, Sean Maroney and Justin Smith took home awards for their professional work.
