J-school junior places third in Hearst breaking news category

Kelly ParsonsKelly Parsons, a junior journalism major from Winston-Salem, N.C., won third place in the breaking news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards.

Parsons will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her Daily Tar Heel story “NCAA hands down sanctions to UNC football program.”

With the win, she is eligible to compete in the Hearst writing national championship in San Francisco, June 4-8. The national championships gather monthly competition winners to demonstrate their skills in on-the-spot assignments to compete for additional awards.

Parsons is the sports editor for The Daily Tar Heel and will intern at The Washington Times this summer in Washington, D.C.

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media has finished first overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards for two consecutive years. The overall first-place finishes resulted from students placing in monthly writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia competitions during the school year.
