UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students took the top two spots in the photojournalism competition’s picture story/series category of the Hearst Journalism Awards.
Carolyn Van Houten, a junior from Greenville, N.C., and Julysa Sosa, a senior from San Antonio, placed first and second, respectively. Their photo stories were selected from 61 entries from students at 38 different schools.
Van Houten will receive a $2,600 scholarship, and Sosa will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Both will submit additional images for a semi-final round of judging in May. Six finalists will be chosen to compete in the program’s national championship to be held in San Francisco in June.
