J-school students place in Hearst competition to help UNC to second place in Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media seniors Carolyn Van Houten and Callaghan O'Hare placed first and fourth, respectively, in the photo picture story/series competition of the 2014-15 Hearst Journalism Awards. With the wins, UNC finished in second place of the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition.

Van Houten will receive a $2,600 award and submit additional photos for a semi-final round of judging for a chance to compete in the Hearst individual national championships in June in San Francisco. O'Hare will receive a $1,000 award. Their images were chosen from 65 entries submitted from students at 41 schools.

With the wins — along with a fifth-place finish in the first photojournalism competition from Dillon Deaton — the school earned the second most accumulated points in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition, finishing behind Western Kentucky University. The second-place win earned the school a $4,000 award.

Earlier in March, the school placed first in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition.

In 2013-14, the school finished third in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition and fourth overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards. The school has finished in the top 5 overall of the Hearst competitions every year since 2004.
