J-school students place in Hearst radio and multimedia competitions

Four UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students placed in the radio broadcast and multimedia categories of the 2014-15 Hearst Journalism Awards.

Charles J. Shelton, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism major from Greenville, N.C., won first-place honors, and Parth Shah, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism major from Charlotte, N.C., took third in the radio broadcast features competition for reports that aired on the school’s weekly radio newsmagazine, "Carolina Connection." Their work was selected from a record 58 entries submitted from students at 35 schools.

Shelton will receive a $2,600 award and Shah a $1,500 award. Both qualify for the Hearst National Broadcast News Championship held in San Francisco in June.

Emily Rhyne, a senior photojournalism major from Wilson, N.C., placed second and Callaghan O'Hare, a senior photojournalism major from San Antonio, placed third in the narrative multimedia storytelling features category.

Rhyne's entry — "Phoenix House" — earns her a $2,000 award and qualifies her for the Hearst National Multimedia Championship in San Francisco. O'Hare will receive a $1,500 award for "Deadwood."

With the wins, UNC is in first place of the Hearst intercollegiate broadcast news and multimedia competitions. The school receives matching grants for each of the wins.

Earlier in January, three students were recognized in the writing, broadcast and photojournalism categories of the Hearst Journalism Awards.

The school finished fourth overall — and third in photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia — in the 2013-14 Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards.

The school has finished in the top 5 overall of the Hearst competitions every year since 2004.
