Lecturer Carol Wolf wins 2018 UNC Student Undergraduate Teaching and Staff Award

Walter E. Hussman Visiting Lecturer in Business Journalism Carol Wolf has won a Student Undergraduate Teaching and Staff Award (SUTSA). The university-wide award comes with a $5,000 check that helps support recipients.

Wolf, who has been at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media since Fall 2016, was nominated by students in her personal finance class. Prior to joining the Hussman School, Wolf served as a reporter for Bloomberg for 19 years, founded Carol Wolf Media, and now writes annual reports, white papers, blogs, articles and executive summaries.

She began working at Bloomberg in 1994, when the financial wire service was only four years old. During the next 18 years, Wolf helped build the organization from its infancy by writing thousands of articles, speaking at public events, cold-calling companies, moderating industry panels and developing nearly 1,000 sources to break news and serve readers. Her beats included consumer products and industrials, about which she wrote trend pieces and covered companies such as Procter & Gamble Co, Caterpillar, Inc., Hertz and 3M. In 2010, she moved to Bloomberg Government in Washington, D.C., where she analyzed the business implications of federal government actions specializing in infrastructure and government contracts. She left Bloomberg in 2013.

During her time at the Hussman School, Wolf has taught both "MEJO 490: Special Topics in Mass Communication" (Personal Finance) and "MEJO 550: Business and the Media." Wolf was the first to teach the now-popular personal finance course.

The SUTSA student committee chooses winners that demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, creation of a dynamic intellectual environment, respect for intellectual diversity and success in positively affecting a broad spectrum of students both in and outside the classroom.

Wolf will be recognized at the Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 24, at 2 p.m.
