Meredith Clark ’14 (Ph.D.) honored by AEJMC division for top dissertation

Meredith Clark, a 2014 doctoral graduate of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, received a divisional dissertation award at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications conference in August.

Clark, now an assistant professor at the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas, earned the AEJMC Mass Communication and Society Dissertation Award for her UNC dissertation, “To Tweet Our Own Cause: A Mixed-Methods Study of the Online Phenomenon ‘Black Twitter.’” Award winners receive cash prize of $3,000 and an opportunity to publish in the division’s journal, “Mass Communication & Society.”

Clark’s “Black Twitter” scholarship has gained notice from national news organizations and recently landed her at No. 66 on the Root 100, a list of 100 influential African Americans. She is on Twitter at @meredithclark.

UNC Hussman School graduates have now won the MC&S Dissertation Award in each of the last two years. Scott Parrott ’13 (Ph.D.) earned the honor in 2014.
