N.C. Halls of Fame ceremony, Oct. 10; nomination deadline, April 30

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will accept nominations through April 30 for the 2014 class of inductees to the N.C. Halls of Fame in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations and for Next Generation Leadership Award honorees.

The induction ceremony will be held in Chapel Hill on Friday, Oct. 10. Details on time, location and reservations TBA.

The Halls of Fame, based in the school, recognize native North Carolinians — or people distinctively identified with the state — who have made outstanding and career-long contributions to journalism, advertising or public relations.

The N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame began with inductions in 1981 of inaugural honorees were Josephus Daniels (posthumously), Charles Kuralt, C.A. "Pete" McKnight, Vermont Royster and Tom Wicker. The school established the Advertising Hall of Fame in 1988 with Charles R. Price as the inaugural honoree. The Public Relations Hall of Fame also began in 1988 with John Harden as the first honoree. The Next Generation Leadership Award was established in 2008 and is awarded by the N.C. Halls of Fame to recognize individuals who represent the next generation of leadership in their fields. Susan Fowler Credle was the first recipient.

In 2013, the halls honored Don Baer (public relations), Jane Brown (journalism), Chris Hondros (journalism, posthumous), Greg Johnson (next generation leadership), Jason Kilar (advertising), Alan Murray (journalism), Dwane Powell (journalism), Wyndham Robertson (journalism), Doug Smith (journalism), Michael Steel (next generation leadership) and Stacy Wall (advertising).
