N.C. loses two journalism icons

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media alumni, Dave Jones ’48 and Don Bolden ‘55, both rose to prominence in North Carolina by serving the public interest through quality journalism in North Carolina. Both passed away recently — Jones on July 21 and Bolden on August 2.

Jones worked for newspapers his entire career, most with The News & Observer in Raleigh, where he finished his career as the associate publisher. He served as chair of the Hussman School’s foundation board for many years and was inducted into the NC Media and Journalism Hall of Fame in 1994.

Bolden rose through the ranks at the Times-News in Burlington during his 51-year career there, eventually being named its first executive editor.

“North Carolina has benefited from a proud and powerful tradition of journalism that serves its people and civic life,” said Susan King, dean of the Hussman School. “Dave Jones and Don Bolden exemplified the best of our journalistic values and commitment to our communities and public service. They leave a legacy I hope our students will continue to build upon.”
