Nine Hussman School students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honor society
Phi Beta Kappa, the prestigious academic honorary society founded in 1776, recently inducted nine students from the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media as new members.
The UNC-Chapel Hill chapter, Alpha of North Carolina, was founded in 1904 and is the oldest of seven chapters in the state. Of the 205 new inductees, 135 are from North Carolina.
The Spring 2019 induction ceremony featured a keynote address by Associate Professor Betsy Towns from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. New members received certificates and Phi Beta Kappa keys, the organization’s symbol.
Hussman School recipients include:
- Peter Andringa '20 (media and journalism and computer science double major; entrepreneurship minor)
- Beth Clifford '19 (media and journalism and public policy double major)
- India Mackinson '19 (environmental studies major; media and journalism minor)
- Anne McDarris '20 (M.A.) (environment and science communication dual-degree student)
- Lydia McInnes '19 (media and journalism and women’s and gender studies double major; creative writing minor)
- Celia McRae '19 (media and journalism and political science double major; public policy minor)
- Leah Moore '19 (media and journalism and music performance double major)
- Savannah Morgan '19 (media and journalism and English double major)
- Ryan Tutwiler '19 (political science major; media and journalism minor)
One UNC student chose not to be listed.
Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify for the honor, which is open to undergraduates in the college and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements: completion of 75 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a GPA of 3.85 or better (on a 4-point scale) or 105 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a 3.75 GPA.
