Powerhouse Hussman School alumnae Nikole Hannah-Jones ’03 (M.A.), Brooke Baldwin ’01 to deliver 2017 commencement addresses

Investigative reporter and former Park Fellow Nikole Hannah-Jones ’03 (M.A.) will deliver the Hussman School Spring Commencement address on Saturday, May 13, one day before fellow alumna Brooke Baldwin '01 takes the stage in Kenan Memorial Stadium for all of UNC.

Hannah-Jones and Baldwin complete a commencement address trifecta, after Hussman School Associate Professor and Executive Director of the UNC Scholars’ Latino Initiative Paul Cuadros served as the featured speaker at UNC's Winter Commencement on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016.

Hannah-Jones — who has covered civil rights and racial injustice for The New York Times since 2015 — won a 2016 Peabody Award for her collection of "This American Life" episodes on school segregation called "The Case for School Desegregation Today."

Baldwin, who anchors the 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekday edition of CNN Newsroom, joined the network in 2008 as a reporter and took over the anchor position in 2010. Most recently, Baldwin played an integral role in CNN’s record-breaking coverage of the historic 2016 presidential election.

The Hussman School will holds it Spring Commencement ceremony in Carmichael Arena at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, prior to the overall UNC Spring Commencement on Sunday, May 14, at 9 a.m. in Kenan Memorial Stadium.
