Student-produced magazines available for iPad, download and online browsing

Students and faculty at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media have created six iPad apps for student-produced magazines. The most recent magazines — Zeitgeist and a second issue of Wabi Sabi — launched spring 2013. Zeitgeist, aimed at the generation that grew up using the Internet, looks at the details and implications of life online. Wabi Sabi, whose first issue launched in spring 2012, is a magazine for and about families with special needs. The issue launched in the winter of 2012-12 (or be more exact) is the first time the classes have produced a second edition of a startup magazine.

Homefront, is for and about military families, and Live It Up is a national magazine that promotes an affordable lifestyle for young, single professionals. They were launched in summer 2012.

The first iPad apps — for magazines Bean & Leaf and the first issue of Wabi Sabi — launched in spring 2012. Bean & Leaf targets a readership of coffee and tea drinkers and anyone attracted to the cafe culture.

The magazines were produced in "Magazine Design" and "Magazine Writing" courses. Lecturer Linda Brinson's students provided the written content of the magazines. Assistant professor Terence Oliver led his students with the creation and design of the printed magazines and the development of the apps. Advertising was created by students in assistant professor Dana McMahan's classes.
