UNC at 43rd annual AEJMC Southeast Colloquium

Nine faculty members and students will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media March 8-10, 2018, at the 43rd annual AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication) Southeast Colloquium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The Carolina contingent scholars will participate in research panels and present authored or co-authored papers and presentations.

Carolina faculty and graduate student activities at AEJMC Southeast 2018 include:

Awards & Honors
  • Shannon Zenner (Ph.D. student) won the student award from the Visual Communication Division for her paper, “It Costs a Lot of Money to Look This Cheap: A Survey to Understand Preference for Differing Levels of Design Quality.”
  • Kyla Garrett Wagner (Ph.D. student) won the student award from the Open Division for her paper, “A Hard Look at Pornography: A comparative content analysis of pornographic films for the presence of safe sex before and after the California Condom Law.”

 

Friday, March 9 — Morning
  • Victoria Ekstrand will present, "Counterspeech, Time, and the First Amendment."
  • Deborah Dwyer (Ph.D. student) will present, "Protecting the Credibility of the Fourth Estate: Journalists' Role in Addressing the Fake News Dilemma."
  • Kriste Patrow (Ph.D. student) will present, "'Walk' This Way, Talk This Way: How Do We Know When the Government is Speaking After Walker v. Sons of the Confederacy?"
  • Mariam Turner (Master's student) will present, "The Ghost in the Machine: Legal Personhood and Copyright Eligibility for Artificial Intelligence."
  • Alex Pardue (Undergraduate student) will present, "Integrating Communications to Attain Organizational Benefits: Can PR fit into the IMC equation or is it better off as a separate operational entity?"
  • Kyla Garrett Wagner (Ph.D. student) will present, "A Hard Look at Pornography: A comparative content analysis of pornographic films for the presence of safe sex before and after the California Condom Law."
  • Ibrahim Emara (Visiting Scholar) will present "Investigating the production of Braille magazines in Egypt."

 

Friday, March 9 — Afternoon
  • Victoria Ekstrand will participate in the panel session, "Globalizing U.S. Media Law Teaching: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century."
  • Shannon Zenner (Ph.D. student) will present, "It Costs a Lot of Money to Look This Cheap: A Survey to Understand Preference for Differing Levels of Design Quality."

 

Saturday, March 10 — Morning
  • Kirsten Adams (Ph.D. student) will present her research-in-progress, "Is All Terrorism Covered Equally? Characteristics of U.S. News Coverage of International Terrorist Attacks."
