UNC J-school triumphs in CPOY multimedia; Powering a Nation takes 5th consecutive gold

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students won 8 of 21 multimedia awards — the most by any school — given in the 68th College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) competition. The school's Powering a Nation won gold for the fifth consecutive year for “Over Water Under Fire.”

What Matters To Us” — stories documenting hardship and hope in America’s recovery from the most recent economic downturn — won silver in the large group multimedia project category. “Heart of the High Country,” produced during the 2013 Carolina Photojournalism Workshop in the North Carolina mountains, won an award of excellence in the category.

Senior Carolyn Van Houten won gold in the individual multimedia story or essay for “World Within Our Own.” Senior Karla Towle won bronze for “High Country Crystal” and May 2013 graduate Julia Wall won an award of excellence for “The Last Bullet” in the same category.

Jon Kasbe, a 2013 graduate, won silver in the multimedia project category for “Heartbeats of Fiji,” and senior Ora DeKornfeld won an award of excellence in the solo journalist multimedia story or essay for “A-Model Romance.”

Earlier in this year’s CPOY judging, 2005 graduate Sara Lewkowicz and Van Houten placed first and second, respectively, in the still photography portfolio category.

Entries were judged Nov. 4 through Nov. 10, at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
