J-school students honored with Chancellor’s Awards

Two UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media seniors were among 66 UNC students honored with Chancellor’s Awards — the University’s most prestigious awards for academic achievement and leadership.

Chelsey Dulaney won the Ernest H. Abernethy Prize in Student Publication Work. She was judged by a special committee to have done the most distinctive work during the current year in the field of student publications. Dulaney founded and served as editor-in-chief of Synapse, a UNC student-run digital magazine that aims to fill the void of thoughtful enterprise and investigative journalism in the UNC community.

Dulaney also won the Chi Omega Award for Scholarship and Leadership, which goes to the senior student in the J-school business journalism program chosen as most outstanding in scholastic achievement and exemplary leadership.

Kathleen Frances Goolsby, a political science double major, won the Saunders Award. Established by the General Alumni Association, the award honors J. Maryon Saunders who served as the University's alumni director for 43 years. It is presented to the member of the graduating class who, as an undergraduate student, has contributed most to the preservation and enhancement of loyalty and goodwill between UNC and its students, alumni and friends.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt presided at the annual Chancellor’s Awards ceremony April 22 in the Great Hall in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. Provost James W. Dean Jr., and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp presented student awards.
