UNC finishes top 5 in Hearst Journalism Awards for 11th consecutive year

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media finished fourth overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards, often called the Pulitzers of college journalism. The school has placed top 5 overall every year since 2004.

The school placed third in the photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia competitions, and will receive $2,000 for each third-place finish.

May 2014 graduate Landon Dowdy and seniors Charlie Shelton and Carolyn Van Houten also will compete in the Hearst individual national championships from June 2-6 in Washington, D.C. Dowdy, Shelton and Van Houten will demonstrate their skills — in the television news, radio news and multimedia competitions, respectively — in on-the-spot assignments to win additional awards.

The school's overall fourth-place finish resulted from students placing in monthly writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia competitions during the 2013-14 school year.

The school finished second overall in 2012-13 and third in 2011-12 and before that won back-to-back national championships.
