Students help produce calendar celebrating African-American experience in N.C.

Four UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media undergraduates were honored at the N.C. Governor’s Mansion Oct. 22 for their leading roles in producing the 2015 Heritage Calendar, celebrating the African-American experience in North Carolina.

They are Olivia C. Cox, Carter B. Gregory, Amanda K. Lee and Mary Tyler March.

The calendar, now in its third year, highlights the achievements of North Carolinians in a wide variety of fields including education, politics, music, athletics, health care and community journalism. Co-sponsored with AT&T of the Carolinas and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the calendar features monthly profiles of inspiring Tar Heels. In addition to paper calendars distributed statewide, longer versions of the profiles are archived at ncheritagecalendar.com. In addition, DPI is converting the student work into lesson plans for every public school teacher in North Carolina.  Faculty member Winston C. Cavin coordinated the project.
