Rooted in the Rapids a finalist in Webby's People’s Voice Award

CAST YOUR VOTE TO SUPPORT THE Hussman School

Rooted in the Rapids — the 2015 edition of the Carolina Photojournalism Workshop (CPJW) project series — is one of five finalists for a Webby Award in the Online Film & Video / General Film / Travel & Adventure category.

Founded in 2004 and co-sponsored by the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the UNC Institute for the Environment, CPJW challenges UNC multimedia students to create a documentary website in one week that covers a unique part of North Carolina. Rooted in the Rapids told stories of the Roanoke River Valley area along the northern border of North Carolina.

Rooted in the Rapids isn't the first Hussman School project to make the Webby Awards list. Living Galápagos, an interactive multimedia website that explores the impact of mankind on the Galápagos Islands, and Heart of the High Country, the 2013 CPJW project that focused on the High Country region of western North Carolina, were two of the five nominees in 2014 in the Online Film & Video — Travel & Adventure category. Living Galápagos went on to win the People's Voice Webby Award.

There are two components to the Webbys. The first is a juried Webby Award for which the selection is made by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. The second component is the People's Voice award, which is open to public voting.

Rooted in the Rapids is one of five finalists from more than 13,000 original submissions. It will be competing against Condé Nast Traveler's "Condé Nast Traveler City Guides," Fusion Network's "The Artisans of Italy," Fountain Digital Labs' "Virry" and The Holland Marketing Alliance and Mustache Agency's "Holland. The Original Cool."

This year’s voting period ends on Thursday, April 21, and the winners will be announced Tuesday, April 26.
