Bloomberg-UNC Diversity Program to launch May 15

On Monday, May 15, a dozen university students competitively selected from across the country will arrive at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media to take part in the first-ever Bloomberg-UNC Business Journalism Diversity Program. The students will spend May 15-17 participating in intensive workshops in Chapel Hill before flying up to New York City on Thursday, May 18, to tour the Bloomberg newsroom, meet key representatives and finish up the program on Friday, May 19.

The five-day program was started by Matt Winkler, editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, to introduce journalism students to the dynamic field of business journalism and to increase diversity among journalists reporting on business.

"Journalism is best when the diversity of the reporters and editors asking the questions is greatest," said Winkler. "The story of the economy, business, technology and markets is too important to be so often reported and edited by people who look alike and sound alike. Bloomberg is committed to creating an aspiration that enables the profession to rise to its fullest potential."

Winkler, who will lead the program, wrote The Bloomberg Way, the book on how Bloomberg reporters should cover business news. Winkler will lead the group through the principles of reporting, editing and applied business and economic knowledge that helped transform Bloomberg News into the world's most successful business reporting operation. Participants will learn to demonstrate that the story of the economy, business and markets is best recorded when the focus is on the greatest diversity of participants.
