J-school seniors place in Hearst multimedia competition; school finishes second overall in multimedia

Julia Wall, a UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media senior photojournalism major, placed second in the news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards multimedia competition. 

Wall will receive $2,000 for her winning entry “The Last Bullet.” 

Hussman School senior photojournalism major Allison Russell placed seventh in the competition for “What is a gun?” 

Wall is a multimedia producer and photographer in the Reese News Lab and vice president of the UNC chapter of the National Press Photographers Association. Russell is the visual managing editor at The Daily Tar Heel.

The school placed second in the 2012-13 Hearst multimedia competition.

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media finished third overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards during the 2011-12 academic year. Before that, the school won back-to-back Hearst overall national championships.

Other Hearst competition results for UNC Hussman School students this year include: Melissa Abbey placed first in the feature writing competition; Kathryn Carlson placed third in the multimedia feature competition; and Michael Rodriguez and Grace Joyal placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the radio broadcast competition.
