‘100 Gallons’ nominated for Emmy

Powering a Nation’s 2012 special report, “100 Gallons,” was named one of five nominees in the New Approaches: Documentaries category of the 34th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).

“100 Gallons” — the only student-produced entry in the category — is an interactive and experimental film that explores the human connection with water. Other nominees in the category include The New York Times, CNN Digital, The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and The Commercial Appeal.

“100 Gallons” has been recognized with awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year International, the Broadcast Education Association and College Photographer of the Year, among others.

Powering a Nation is an experiment in knowledge-based journalism that investigates the political, economic and scientific tensions behind energy in the U.S. to engage citizens and inspire informed decision-making. Launching a new project each summer, Powering a Nation began in 2008 with funding from the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education. In July 2013, it launched “Over Water Under Fire” — an interactive documentary that presents the Colorado River as a living timeline of our nation's innovations and exploitations with water.
