Triangle area black journalists to host panel on Obama coverage

The Triangle Association of Black Journalists (TABJ) will host "The Media's Role in President Obama's Election: A Local Perspective" from 10:00 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The panel discussion will be held at the H.M. Michaux School of Education at N.C. Central University.

The panel discussion will cover reporters' trials and triumphs in covering the Presidential campaign, including the inauguration, and give audience members the opportunity to present and discuss issues of interest in journalism. The panel will be moderated by WTVD-TV weekend morning anchor/Durham reporter Anthony Wilson. Featured panelists include: Dan Bowens, reporter for WRAL-TV; Sommer Brokaw, reporter with The Triangle Tribune; Gregory Childress, reporter for The Herald-Sun; Cash Michaels, editor of The Carolinian; and WTVD-TV weekend anchor/reporter Fred Shropshire.

TABJ is sponsoring the event to promote the organization's mission of supporting black journalists and other media professionals while providing resources for the members of the community in regard to how the media work and how to deal more effectively with the media.

This panel discussion is TABJ's first event for 2009 and is co-sponsored by the NCCU Association of Black Journalists (NCCUABJ) and the Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ). It is free and open to surrounding colleges as well as the community.
