Former WRAL exec joins faculty

Jim Hefner

Jim Hefner, former vice president and general manager at CBS affiliate WRAL-TV in Raleigh, has joined the University of North Carolina’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media faculty as a professor of the practice of journalism.

Hefner, a native North Carolinian and a 1972 graduate of the school, has nearly 30 years of experience in news direction and general management at television stations in North Carolina and Pittsburgh. Before coming to the school, Hefner was vice president and general manager of WRAL-TV and served on the board of directors for Capitol Broadcasting Co. since 2002.

“Jim will bring fresh professional experience and a deep understanding of news judgment and news values,” said Jean Folkerts, dean of the school. “Jim participated in WRAL’s early venture into high-definition broadcasting and will be extremely helpful as we make the transition to high definition in the school. We are delighted that he will be able to share his experiences and guide students toward professional work.”

“Over the years I have worked with a number of reporters and news directors,” said John Greene, vice president of special projects for Capitol Broadcasting. “Jim is easily the most knowledgeable and most committed newsman in that group. He is a true professional who would share that knowledge, experience and inspiration in developing future newsmen and women.”

Prior to his work with Capitol Broadcasting, Hefner spent more than 15 years as president and general manager at ABC affiliate WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. He also wrote for newspapers in eastern North Carolina and the News & Observer before moving to television news.

In May 2008, Hefner stepped down as president of the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters after leaving WRAL-TV. He has held various posts on service and professional boards.

Hefner earned a master’s degree from Duquense University in Pittsburgh. He is also a graduate of the Hearst Management Institute, which is conducted through Northwestern University.
