Phi Beta Kappa inductees

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest college honorary society, inducted five recent J-school graduates as new members. They are:

• Amy Beatrice Holter, daughter of John Holter and Betty Williams of Greenville

• Sherrie Marchant Donecker, daughter of Dr. John M. Donecker and Anne Donecker of Reidsville

• Meredith Brooke Karr, daughter of Michael and Joanne Karr of Orlando

• Mallory Kristen Plaks, daughter of Michael and Chris Plaks of Cooper City

• Jesse Clark Baumgartner, son of Daniel and Anne Baumgartner of Seattle.

The ceremony featured remarks by Dr. Oliver Smithies, Weatherspoon Eminent Distinguished Professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at UNC and co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

A student who has completed 75 hours of course work and has a grade-point average of 3.85 or better is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has competed 105 hours of course work and has a 3.75 grade-point average.

Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify.
