J-school students place in Hearst individual national championships

Jon Kasbe, a rising senior at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, finished first in the multimedia individual national championship of the Hearst Journalism Awards. May 2012 graduate Reema Khrais placed second in the radio broadcast championship, and rising senior Kelly Parsons earned an honorable mention in the writing championship.

From June 4-7, 29 finalists – all winners from 14 monthly Hearst competitions – participated in the annual Hearst Championships in San Francisco where they demonstrated their writing, photography, radio, television and multimedia skills in rigorous on-the-spot assignments. The assignments were decided by media professionals who judged the finalists’ work throughout the year and at the championships.

Kasbe received a $5,000 award. Khrais earned a $4,000 award and Parsons $1,500.

The school placed second overall in the intercollegiate multimedia competition. The second-place finish resulted from students placing in monthly multimedia competitions during the 2011-12 school year. The school tied for second nationally in broadcast news.
