Hulu CEO Jason Kilar to deliver Park Lecture Oct. 14

Jason KilarJason Kilar, Hulu CEO and a 1993 advertising graduate of the school, will deliver the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s Roy H. Park Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Gerrard Hall.

Kilar’s lecture, “Sex, Lies & Online Video: From Howell Hall to Hulu,” is free and open to the public.

Kilar was named CEO of Hulu, an online video joint venture of News Corp, NBC Universal, the Walt Disney Company and Providence Equity Partners, in June 2007 after nearly a decade with Amazon.com.

Hulu brings together videos from nearly 190 content companies, including FOX, NBC Universal, ABC, Comedy Central and more. Hulu partners with more than 250 Fortune 500 advertisers who associate their brands with the online video content.

As an executive at Amazon.com, Kilar helped expand the online retailer’s business beyond bookselling, originally writing the business plan for Amazon’s entry into the video and DVD businesses. He ultimately led that unit as general manager and vice president. He went on to become vice president and general manager of Amazon’s North American media businesses, which included the company’s books, music, video and DVD categories.

Kilar began his career at the Walt Disney Company, where he spent two years with Disney Development Corporation from 1993-95.

Kilar graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and business administration. He earned an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 1997.
