Divided by the Sea

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students Andrea Patiño Contreras and Gabriela Arp were awarded the VIMY Global Team award from the UNC Center for Global Initiatives to tell personal stories from the European migration crisis.

They spent one month documenting a small town in Southern Italy called Reggio Calabria, which has seen the arrival of thousands of refugees making the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean.

The site features interactive migration routes and multimedia stories about the refugees entering Italy and the volunteers helping them along the way. The website was designed and developed by Andy Roberson and Clinton King, two UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media undergraduate students advised by Steven King.
