Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media Carroll Hall

The 2023 Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media will be held in person on June 25-28.

The application process is now officially closed.

The fully-funded program is for high school students who will be seniors in the 2023-2024 school year. The program welcomes students of varying diversity, including but not limited to religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and gender. The 12 students accepted to the program will learn from classroom study, real-world reporting, newsroom practice and professional mentors. The workshop will consist of multi-platform storytelling and writing in which the participants work together to make a multimedia publication called The Mix.

The first workshop was held for rising high school seniors in 2007. The program honors the legacy of professor Charles ‘Chuck’ Sumner Stone Jr., who retired from the school in 2005.

Carolina Sports Journalism Camp Carroll Hall

Rising high school juniors and seniors with an interest in sports and media attend the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp. This three-day residential camp includes instructional sessions in sports broadcasting, sports writing, sports photography and much more. Students will be housed on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus.

The Carolina Sports Journalism Camp also includes classroom study and practice in the field and will feature sports reporters and sports personalities. Students take a behind-the-scenes tour of UNC’s sports media facilities. They cover a press conference, write a sports feature story and experience what it's like to work on a sports media deadline.
