Living Galapagos

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students have created “Living Galápagos,” a collection of short documentary films about the Galápagos Islands.

The multimedia project celebrates the natural diversity of the islands while combatting the misconception that they remain an untouched natural paradise free of human interference.

“The Galápagos Islands are a fascinating and sometimes misunderstood place. Many people don’t know about the 30,000 people that inhabit the islands, or the rich culture they bring,” said associate professor Pat Davison, executive producer of the project. “But along with a thriving population comes challenges like illegal immigration, invasive species and illegal fishing.”

“Living Galápagos” is the latest in a line of award-winning international multimedia projects from UNC’s journalism school, and it builds on the 2009 project of the same name done with support from the Galápagos Science Center, the UNC Center for Galápagos Studies and the Galapagos Academic Institute for Arts and Sciences of the University of San Francisco de Quito.
