UNC at 102nd annual AEJMC conference in Toronto, Canada

Nine graduate students, 13 faculty members and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Aug. 6-10, 2019, at the 102nd annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in Toronto, Canada.

The Carolina contingent of scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers and presentations.

Graduate program alumni, students and faculty are invited to attend a breakfast in conjunction with the conference. The event will include an update on the graduate program to celebrate the school's legacy of scholarship, mentorship and community.

Awards and honors
  • Jordan Morehouse (Ph.D. student) was awarded the AEJMC Mass Communication and Society Research Award of $10,000 for her research project: The impact of religion in organizational crises: An examination of religious rhetoric and religiosity.
  • Jordan Morehouse (Ph.D. student) and Lucinda Austin won the second-place paper award for their paper, “The Impact of Religion in Situational Crisis Communication Theory: An Examination of Religious Rhetoric and Religiosity.”
  • Pablo Miño '17 (M.A.), (Ph.D. student) and Rhonda Gibson won third place in the AEJMC Research Prize for Professional Relevance for their paper, "Intercultural competencies needed for evolving media professions: Educating the next generation of globally minded communicators." 
  • Kirsten Adams (Ph.D. student) won the first-place student paper award from the Religion and Media Interest group for her paper, “Faith in the White House: Public Perceptions of U.S. Presidents’ Communicative Performance of Spiritual Leadership.”
  • Yan Qu (Ph.D. student) won the third-place student paper award from the Public Relations division for his paper, “Examining the Influence of Personal Discussion Network on Consumer Engagement Behavior: An Egocentric Network Study.”
