UNC Hussman student and field hockey star Erin Matson in Carolina Alumni Review

“Erin Matson seems to be on the verge of that rarest company — the best that ever was.”

That’s how acclaimed sports writer and UNC Hussman lecturer Tim Crothers opens his can’t-miss new story about Erin Matson ’22, a UNC Hussman rising junior and UNC field hockey athlete for the ages. Crothers profiled Matson for the new issue of the Carolina Alumni Review, outlining her field hockey career and time at UNC through reflections from Matson and her coaches, family and friends, including teammate and fellow Hussman student Eva Smolenaars ’21. The profile includes standout photos by Hussman alumnus Jeffrey A. Camarati ’19 (M.A.). Read Crothers’ story to find out why Matson is even responsible for bringing a legendary UNC coach back from the brink of retirement.

Matson, who has never lost a game at Carolina, won the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award after her most recent season. The UNC women’s field hockey team brought home the national championship in November, after their second perfect season in a row. At the time, Matson spoke with us about the team’s new motto, “Believe it, do it, earn it” and about why she chose to study advertising and public relations at UNC Hussman. Read that story, including interviews with other UNC Hussman students on the team, here.
