The Radio Television Digital News Association is recognizing the work of UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students with two of the eight national student Edward R. Murrow Awards this year. Carolina Connection — UNC Hussman’s student-produced radio broadcast — earned the Murrow Award for Excellence in Audio Newscast. Erin Jenkins ’21 won the Murrow Award for Excellence in Video Hard News. for “Child Brides? North Carolina has a problem” that she produced in the school’s Media Hub course as part of a multimedia package.

The premiere documentary screening of "Earn it The Carolina Way" will be held in the Freedom Forum Conference Center on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. The documentary — created by students in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media — showcases UNC’s 2020 NCAA national championship field hockey team.

UNC Hussman students don’t just hit the books, they engage professionally with real-world issues and clients through a host of immersive learning experiences that equip them for success in 21st-century careers. Campaigns involving real-world clients in the school’s advertising and public relations courses exemplify UNC Hussman’s focus on immersive learning, creating win-win partnerships that brighten students’ portfolios while providing companies with fresh ideas and assets.

Lisa Stockman Mauriello of Summit, N.J., passed away on Aug. 4, 2021. Visitation will be Aug. 8  (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.) and Aug. 9  (4 p.m. – 9 p.m.) at Bradley, Brough & Dangler in Summit. Funeral Mass will be at 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 10 at St. Teresa of Avila in Summit.

Olympic athletes represent determination, hard work and top-tier levels of graceful, skilled athleticism. They’re also really, really hard to get a hold of — especially during the Olympics. Students in UNC Hussman’s “MEJO 390: Tokyo Olympics” class have been finding that out as they use the Summer School course to cover the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan, which began July 23 and end on Aug. 8, 2021.

Nine graduate students, nine faculty members and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Aug. 4-7, 2021, at the 104th Annual for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, held in a virtual format. These scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers.

For Danita Morgan ’81, taking a job at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media feels like coming home. As the school’s new associate dean for development and alumni affairs, she is excited to give back to the first-class educational institution that shaped her life’s path — as an undergraduate, a student in the school's graduate-level certificate program, a volunteer and now as a professional.

The Washington Post’s augmented reality interactive video presents a 3D view of what looks like Olympian Brooke Raboutou speed-climbing the walls of your office or living room, thanks in part to UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s Reese Innovation Lab. Sport climbing is one of four new Olympic sports alongside skateboarding, karate and surfing to debut at the Tokyo Olympics this summer (July 23–August 8, 2021). Qualification rounds start in two weeks for climbers from around the world. The August 5 and 6 finals will combine three climbing disciplines: speed, boulders and lead. So what’s it like to climb a 50-foot-tall (15-meter) wall with 31 holds in under ten seconds for the speed climbing part of that competition? Washington Post readers can find out by watching The Washington Post Lede Lab’s augmented reality (AR) and interactive video released today of 20-year-old American rock star climber Brooke Raboutou.

Of course, I’m disappointed that Nikole Hannah-Jones will not be joining the school this summer. But I’m also aware it’s been a long six months for her and for our UNC students.
