Panama, Documentary Multimedia Storytelling

March 9-20

Five graduate and 18 undergraduate students are embarking on a storytelling adventure to the Bocas del Toro province of Panama’s coast as a part of the school’s Documentary Multimedia Storytelling course. They are working on a virtual reality documentary project — testing new 360-video technology through video rigs, a robot, an underwater rig and drones while producing stories that explore the coral reefs and marine life of the Caribbean. Faculty members Steven King, Patrick Davison and Laura Ruel are leading the trip with assistance from Hussman School 2009 master’s graduate Jose Corbella. The UNC Department of Marine Sciences is providing a portion of the funds for this trip.

London, International Media Markets

March 11-18

Sixteen undergraduates are crossing the Atlantic as a part of the school’s International Media Markets course. The course introduces students to the British media market, exploring both the similarities and differences between the United Kingdom and the United States. During the trip, students will complete a variety of immersive activities, including a walking tour of London’s tech startup scene. Students will also visit Buzzfeed, Google, BBC, Burson-Marsteller and City University London. Faculty member Rhonda Gibson leads the trip with staff support from Assistant Director of Professional and International Programs Michael Penny and Senior Associate Dean of Strategy and Administration Louise Spieler.

San Francisco, Career Networking

March 13-16

Nine undergraduates were selected to spend their break in San Francisco as part of the spring 2016 networking trip. Students will meet with alumni from FleishmanHillard, Vessel, Airbnb, Google and Facebook. Jay Eubank, director of career services, leads the trip. Dean Susan King, Director of Alumni Affairs and Donor Relations Robin Jackson and faculty member Joe Cabosky are joining students on the trip. The school will host an alumni reception on Monday, March 14, 2016, at 6 p.m. in Hotel Rex. Students will also be posting using hashtag #MJSanFran16.

Raleigh, CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program

March 16-20

In partnership with Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) in Raleigh, the Hussman School will host an intensive hands-on workshop for college seniors or graduate students within six months of graduation who are pursuing broadcast careers. The program, which funds 12 top students from across the country, is designed to prepare fellows for future broadcast media careers and help increase diversity in the industry. The students produce reports and newscasts in WRAL-TV’s state-of-the-art facilities, work side-by-side with WRAL-TV’s award-winning news professionals, create clips for their professional reels and make invaluable industry contacts. Lynn Owens — the Stembler Lecturer in broadcast and electronic journalism and director of the school’s student-run newscast, Carolina Week — coordinates this year’s diversity fellowship program. Dean Susan King, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Charlie Tuggle and Associate Professor Francesca Dillman Carpentier are also participating in the program.
